AeroPress Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe

As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, we all love a good warm beverage to chase the chills away and help us get cosy.

Pumpkin is such a classic autumn flavour, and in recent years, the Pumpkin Spice Latte has become a staple for many during this transitional season.

But many of us want to avoid purchasing chain-store coffee. If you’re a true coffee aficionado, you likely want more control over your brew – the beans chosen and technique used to create them.

So, to celebrate the arrival of autumn and to allow you to get that great pumpkiny taste, we’ve shared how you can make a Pumpkin Spice Latte at home!

Don’t Add the Spice Direct to Your Coffee

One of the biggest mistakes you can make with spiced coffees is to add the spice direct to your cup after you’ve brewed. This will just leave you with gritty lumps floating around in your cup.

A latte should be smooth, so to achieve a spiced latte, you’ll need to add the spices to the coffee grounds and extract the flavour through a filter to brew a flavourful coffee.

This is where the AeroPress comes in so handy. The AeroPress coffee filters are ideal for this as they are micro-filters which can filter out the grittiness of any spices added without losing the flavour.

Step 1: Make Pumpkin Spice

To create this cosy autumn sip, you will need pumpkin spice. If you do not have a pre-made mix of pumpkin spice, you can easily make it with a blend of spices.

To make pumpkin spice combine:

- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- ½ tsp ginger
- ¼ tsp cloves

Step 2: Brew Your Coffee

Set up your AeroPress, adding in the amount of ground coffee you like, plus one teaspoon worth of the pumpkin spice mix. Add the water to the chamber, stir together, let it steep for a moment and then press into your cup.

Step 3: Prepare Your Milk

The heart of a latte is the milk. It should be steamed and lightly frothy, although this can be trickier to achieve at home when compared to the impressive machinery in a coffee shop.

If you’re lucky enough to have a steam machine or foaming device, then now is the time to use it!

If not, you can simply heat up your milk and froth it by hand. You can either do this by heating the milk in a pan on your stovetop and using a balloonwhisk to create a frothier consistency. You can also put milk into a lidded jar, shake vigorously and heat in the microwave for a similar effect.

Step 4: Combine

Top up your coffee mug with the steamed milk. Stir the coffee and milk together, so that they are combined.

Step 5: Make it Sweet

As a cosy autumn treat, the Pumpkin Spice Latte is often served sweet. If you would like to treat your sweet tooth and add some sugar to the drink, then now is the time!

Add a few teaspoons of sugar to the latte, or alternatively, try a squeeze of agave syrup. The level of sweetness you enjoy is a very personal thing, so you should add a little at a time until you create the flavour you are after.

It is important to add the sugar after the milk, as milk itself typically adds a sweeter flavour to your coffee. If you sweeten your coffee to your desired amount before adding the milk, you could end up with an overly sugared drink that you don’t enjoy.

Do you enjoy these warm-flavoured beverages in the autumn and winter months, or do you prefer to keep it simple with a black coffee all year round?
